[Pixel Art] Entomorphashion vol. 1
A downloadable project
For the creative jam this time I'm doing a pixel art/clothing design.
I have other ideas I have yet to make, so I titled it as volume 1 for the moment.
The theme is something I have had in mind for a long time - Outfit designs based on insects!
Why is it out of season? Well, it's getting close to winter now, so the insects I took inspiration from can rarely be found or not found in the season.
Entomo-: Prefix for insect-related subjects
Morph: Taken from "morphology" (the study of form and organisation) and "biomorphism" (taking the patterns of living organisms into artistic designs)
Fashion: Probably no need to explain this, I'm making clothing designs.
First design:
Evening dress, themed after golden moon moth, Taiwanese subspecies (臺灣長尾水青蛾, Actias sinensis subaurea)
Actual photo of the insect: (Photo credit: 張波比)
Males and females of this species have different color schemes, and males are mainly golden yellow, and females are aqua color to pastel green.
My design is based on a pastel green colored female.
The golden leaves are made after the larval host plant of the moth, Formosa sweet gum (楓香, Liquidambar formosana). (Photo credit: Me)
They can actually be found all year round, but November to December seem to be the time when they are much harder to find.
Second design:
Yukata, themed after Watanabe's lanternfly (渡邊氏東方蠟蟬, Pyrops watanabei)
Actual photo of the insect: (Photo credit: Me)
The adults of this species mainly occur from May to August in Taiwan, basically summertime, so I decided to use its pattern on a yukata, the clothing often worn for summer festivals in Japan. The red color of the obi (belt) is based on the red color of the abdomen.
The leaf pattern on the hairpin and obi comes from its host plant, Chinese tallowtree (烏桕, Triadica sebifera). (Photo credit: Me)
Third design:
Casual clothing set, themed after a kind of cicada (小蟪蛄, Platypleura takasagona , the species does not seem to have English common name)
Actual photos of the insect: (Photo credit: Me)
Despite the earth-toned color scheme that seem to fit autumn/winter, the adults of this species emerge in summers, roughly from May to August in Taiwan.
The dark colors of the tank top are based on its hind wings, which are normally concealed.
That's pretty much about it, hope you guys like these!
